STA Travel Bugs: Thailand, when, where and how much?

At the TravellersPoint, in amongst the Asia forum Matt, who is looking to spend a month in Thailand has asked when the best time to go is. Presumably an thorough fellow he has also tagged on the end a note wondering how much money he’ll need to see him through a four week tour.

Im looking at my next trip for next year and I was thinking about Thailand for a month. Could someone please tell me when is best to go there, Im planning on going to the islands, phuket probably land in Bankok so spend a few days there. I was wondering when most travellers tend to go over.
Also how much money would you recommend I need, im not planning on living the high life in 5* hotels, more hostels etc try and possible experience how they live out there.

Cheers, Matt

There have been a couple of responses offering Matt details about the best time to go, and now we’ve got Jen of STA do divulge some travel gems of information regarding where and how much.

Hi Matt,

Ko pha-ngan is wicked that’s where the full moon party is beach huts are from around £4-5 per person a night based on 2 sharing. You can rent a moped for about the same price highly recommend hiring one its perfect for exploring! the roads are pretty quiet too.

Krabi is good for snorkeling and learning to dive lots of diving there.

Ko Phi Phi is really chilled and there are no cars on the island! you can hire a boat and go snorkeling. You can also visit the beach from ‘The Beach’ from there which is cool.

Phuket and Ko Samui are quite developed and good starting points to get to the other smaller islands you can fly or get the bus to Phuket and Ko Samui from Bangkok and then get boats from there to other smaller islands.

I would budget £25 a day to have a good time you could probably live on £15 if you don’t go anywhere!

When i was there I’d have Vegetable stir fry with rice in one place and it was 70 baht.

Generally restaurants/cafes on the islands range meals from £2-4 depending what meal you have and if you eat off street vendors its even cheaper!

Happy planning!

Jen

    Hi Matt,

I am no expert on when and where to go in Thailand, however i went with StaTravel two years ago and it was brilliant.I am going again in January this year and will book through StaTravel again.

We went in September, which according to my friends ment it would rain all the time - this is just not true, its always ok during the day (The storms at night were pretty amazing though). Whilst in Bangkok it was pretty over cast but oddly as soon as we started trekking out to the East coast, the sun was scorching and stayed like that right the way down to Singapore.

We went to Koh Pha-ngan on the way, i think the season decides which coast you should travel…not sure though… and the beaches are amazing, the bungalows are pretty neat and beach BBQ’s with a steak on the menu is a god’s send - careful drinking the redbull though, that stuff is powerful, with or without vodka!

My advice, take more than anyone says you should..everything is cheap, but you are guarenteed to see something that you really must have and finding reliable cash machines is a mission.

Also look up all Thailand scams before you go..its pretty safe and everyone is friendly but be on your guard, you wouldn’t go to a jewellery shop because a taxi driver reccomended it in Britain would you?

Have fun..can anyone reccomend another thai tour for Feb? (2-3 weeks)I want to see the real Thailand/cambodia/vietnam

    Rich
