STA Travel Bugs? Campervans in New Zealand
I love campervans! I used to have a 1972 VW Beetle in a two-tone of slightly off-white and baby blue, it was low and cute and… enough of my personal reminiscing, this is neither the time nor place.
To the subject at hand, renting a campervan in the beautiful land of New Zealand. It is Jamie Smith who is inquiring over at the Travellers Point forum. He and two pals are wanting to opt for the it-goes-the-way-we-point-it and we-can-sleep-in-it option rather than relying on buses and hostels. Sounds good, but he would like to hear some recommendations and, as yet, the Travellers Point community is yet to respond.
Thankfully though STA’s very own Trish knows the score, and it seems to be a winning result in favour of campervan action! Read her eloquent thoughts here…
Campervan travel in NZ is a great way of seeing the country at your own pace, it also avoids the necessity of having to find accommodation in a new town or city for which you are unfamiliar. The roads are good (although mostly single lane with frequent passing lanes) and in the South Island they are winding roads around the souther alps. But if they are confident drivers this should not cause any problem. Most camping grounds (for which there are hundreds), you can pay a small fee to hook up to electricity if necessary and get hot showers etc. if their campervan doesn’t have one. Campervans are a popular choice, not just for foreign visitors but for the locals as well. Most campervan companies provide you with maps and the AA in NZ do a good guide for camping grounds etc where you can park up for the night.
Hope this helps.
Trish
