STA Travel Bugs: Budget accommodation in Hong Kong
Hong Kong: glistening modern mecca of consumerist splendour, right? But what happens if you’ve got a bad case of the credit crunches and still want to make the most of your stay on this unique island? Well, you read this damned helpful post, is what you do. Because we’ve plucked a common query from the Travellers Point forum about how to stay in HK on a budget and asked our STA Travel contact Dylan to pitch in with his own educated opinion.
Take it away Dugong:
Does anyone know of a decent place to stay in Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island? Safe, clean, with ensuite bath and all the creature comforts…I need accommodation for 1 month…so something reasonably priced…budget of less than US $60 a day?
Visit the forum to offer him your own tips, or read here for Dylan’s suggestions…
Hi Dugong,
Acutally staying on Hong Kong Island itself tends to be very expensive and I think it will be near impossible to find accomodation under US$60 per day. I’ve just had a look through some of the hostels we have on the island and they cost at least £100 per night - that is the YWCA Garden View International House, a laid back hostel with great views of Victoria habour and even has a pool.
Now a great way to cut cost is by actually staying in the Kowloon district. There are a lot more hostels to choose from and they are lot easier on the pocket. Hong Kong has an excellent transport system and it is easy and quick to get to Aberdeen from here. You can either catch the MRT or it’s just a quick trip on the famous Star Ferries. These run every couple of minutes and are amazingly cheap.
One hostel in Kowloon that’s within budget is the Garden Hostel - located on the ‘Golden Mile’ and two minutes walk to the Star Ferry terminal. The rooms are bright and super clean. Another one that came recommended to me from one of my regular customers is the Las Vegas Hostel - recently renovated, it’s a safe, quiet and clean place to rest your head.
