Becky and Matt WTI: Bungee, motorbikes and monsoon season

Becky and Matt have added two more video updates. One is from Macau featuring the highest bungee jump in the world and the other is about the thrill of riding motorbikes during monsoon season in Vietnam – with the local (and self-proclaimed) Tom Cruise nonetheless.

“This is my office…”

“Three minutes on the wrong side of the road in a monsoon…”

If you visit the World Traveller Internship site you can catch up on more details via the blog. Becky has written on saying Hello to Hong Kong, covering many elements of the ‘sprawling metropolis’ including the westernisation on display,

“On the high rise opposite from me there stands an gigantic poster of a serene looking Nicole Kidman, advertising Omega watches. All around me there are signs in English, double-decker buses, fast food joints like McDonalds, Burger King and KFC, and all the designer clothes brands you could ask for […] The prices are also closer to what we are accustomed to at home, although having flown in from dirt cheap Hanoi everything seems astronomically expensive by comparison (My advice, don’t compare.).”

Matt has followed this up with a look back on Vietnam; Life in the fast lane. There’s plenty to reflect on, though I was particularly intrigued by Top Bar (anyone know it?) – a drinking establishment that appeared to be someone’s flat and served cocktails,

“[…] which you got for free if you stood on one leg for four minutes.”

Obviously this gets progressively more difficult as the evening goes on.

That’s about it for now… and if you want to be absolutely up-to-date they’ve been in Tasmania for the last few days, which of course you’ll know because you’re following their tweets @statravelukwti, @MattM337 and @BexSTA2010.

More coming soon.

Becky and Matt WTI: Mud and Ruins…

There’s plenty to catch up on with the STA Travel UK World Traveller Interns Becky and Matt in their post Suits, shirts and sleeper trains as they make their way through Vietnam,

“A week further down the line and we have managed to stretch across the whole length of Vietnam, I am now sitting in my room over looking Ha Long Bay, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.”

Sounds like bliss… but as promised in the title, here is the mud

And the ruins…

Next up is the capital Hanoi before then heading to Hong Kong. Have you been to Hanoi or Hong Kong? Let us know what you liked and what you didn’t about the destinations in the comments.

Travelling to Ho Chi Minh City?

The first video is in from the STA Travel UK World Traveller Interns Becky and Matt. And their first stop is Ho Chi Minh City.

The YouTube video features Becky mastering noodles, Matt mastering the native tongue thanks to a World Cup wall chart and some particular good lip-syncing to ‘the Bublé’ come the final moments. There is also a Matt-cam shot of him crossing the street in Vietnam, something he refers to as ‘suicide’, and Becky sampling the confines of the Viet Cong tunnel systems… oh, there’s also an M16 machine gun.

Keep up with the guys at the WTI site, @statravelwtiuk, STA Travel Connect and Facebook. Enjoy the video…

Becky and Matthew – STA Travel’s World Traveller Interns 2010!

The announcement has been made – Becky and Matthew are STA Travel’s World Traveller Interns 2010!

“So here’s me in Italy: walking on the beach, riding on the back of a scooter, eating ice cream, chatting with the locals, discovering the ‘real’ focaccia, cycling on the seafront, participating in commemoration services, taking in the sights and getting into the spirit of la ‘dolce vita’.”

“Living in greater London has its perks! There is so much to do, so much to see, and so many people to meet in the nations capitol. I went around for a few days to show you what it’s all about, via the tube, a car and on foot when I ran the London Marathon on Sunday the 25th of April (what was I thinking!) I hope you enjoy it!!”

It has taken them five rounds to secure their spot as part of the STA Travel team as interns. However they’ll be no tea making duties for these two. In a heady three months they’ll be circling the globe experiencing all that they can in different countries among a myriad of cultures and relaying it all through the World Traveller Intern site.

The trip begins with ‘sitting on a plane getting excited’ Bangkok bound with South East Asia waiting to be explored. After three weeks it’ll be time to leap (not unlike a kangaroo) to Australia where there will be visits to Rainbow Beach, Byron Bay, Sydney and much more besides. Departing Oz will lead the two interns to New Zealand where a highlight of the two week stay will almost certainly be exploration of Kaikoura, one of the best coastal wildlife regions on the planet. Next on the itinerary is Latin America, cue Buenos Aires, Iguassu Falls, Paraty and Rio de Janeiro. And the final leg is a brief stop in the USA, Miami to be precise, before heading home with the trip of a lifetime complete!

Although Becky and Matthew have been triumphant it wouldn’t have been a contest without the splendid work of all the intern hopefuls. Paddy and Rusja deserve a special mention to for taking the runners up spots. But to everyone who got involved and made the competition the spectacle it was, STA travelbuzz would like to say a huge thank you. Thank you!

Now all we have to do is sit back and enjoy the adventures of Becky and Matthew. It promises to be exceptional…

A Berlin wall photo and WTI update…

For those in the know, the fact that this Berlin wall photo has been delivered by STA Explorer Malph will fill you with joy (possibly)…

Malph is the chief architect in a global campaign title The International Mankini Challenge. The challenge being to get photographs of men in mankinis while in front of landmarks across the globe. Malph may have returned, but the challenge has continued as brave and proud individuals carry the torch. Yet, Malph recently visited Germany and decided to pack his hi-vis leisure wear… he is such a professional.

On the World Traveller Internship front things are fairly quiet. Behind locked doors are furrowed brows of the STA Travel hierarchy as they count votes and assess the final entries of the hopefuls looking to land the dream role.

The time now is for reflection. Something Harry and Natalie have both taken advantage of.

Harry discusses his filming of the Narnia of Essex, Burnham on Crouch,

“Last weekend I ran around my home town in Essex much like an inadequate athlete, with a tripod, and the odd mate, to film my STA final video – I am now in the top ten of this crazy internship competition and it’s getting very exciting.”

There is some behind the scenes info, like a textual version of a DVD extra. The oyster escapades are especially entertaining, as are the further details on Bruce, a local who features in his submission; he’s a man who loves speed…

Natalie has taken a positive viewpoint to the making the top 10 of the competition regardless of the final outcome,

“I feel like I’ve really stretched myself during the competition, and that is definitely a good thing. I’ve learned how to make movies, improved my blog, and found out a lot about social media that I never knew before. These are all such great skills, and I’m so thankful that STA gave me the push that I needed to learn them.”

She’s already considering taking these skills and producing some travel documentaries of a socio-political ilk. Cool stuff indeed.

STA World Traveller Internship – the end is nigh… [part three]

The last two final video submissions for STA Travel’s World Traveller Internship have arrived. They’ve come from Tiff and Chris and round out all the entries, which you can see in this post and this post or, if you’d rather go straight to the source, on STA Travel’s World Traveller Intern site.

Tiff – Barry
There has been a failing of technology – but undeterred Tiff has fought through and given us her guide to Barry. There are seagulls, stealthy photography and Barry beach action…

Chris – Leeds
Leeds has been given the Chris Cousins treatment. A whistle stop tour of what to see, interviews with the locals and even minor celebrities…

That’s it. All ten finalists and their submissions, their last hope at landing the once in a lifetime position of being STA Travel UK’s World Traveller Intern. Good luck to them all!

STA World Traveller Internship – the end is nigh… [part two]

Yesterday we gave you four of the final video submissions and they were great. Today four more have rolled in and they too are great.

I present to you Paddy, Natalie, Becky and Georgie sharing little pieces of their worlds with you…

Paddy – Headingley
Paddy shows us that appearences can be deceptive when it comes to Headingley, while also treating us to the delights of Cafe Lento. The venue for food, drink and fountainous knowledge provided by owner Richard…

Georgie – London
London isn’t just the capital of our fair country. As shown by Georgie it can be Thailand, Australia, South America and the USA…

Natalie – Nottingham
Nottingham is everything a city should be, and offers splendid support of the arts and niche underground appeal due in no small part to its massive student population. Natalie shines a light on its lesser seen scene…

Becky – Alassio
Walking on the beach or riding a scooter, eating ice cream or discovering the ‘real’ focaccia, Alassio in Italy has it all. Becky enters the spirit of ‘la dolce vita’ and takes us along with her…

Only Chris and Tiffany left to submit their entries and then it’s all over, everything that can be done has been done and we must wait to hear who’ll be STA Travel’s World Traveller Intern 2010.
