Round The World Trip

#STAwin – STA Travel’s Round the World Competition!

Week two is drawing to a close! The Fuji Sunset is about to disappear behind the horizon and with it your chance to enter the second round of STA Travel’s Round the World Quiz that gives you the opportunity to win two #RTW flights!

This week has been focusing on the Fuji Sunset trip – A round the world journey that takes in Lima, Santiago, Auckland, Christchurch, Sydney and Tokyo. If you’re wondering the sort of thing available when traveling through these places there is plenty in our archives. However if you’re after something a little more immediate try these links from STA Explorer Amar and his site Gap Year Escape on both New Zealand and Australia.

Amongst them you’ll find entries such as his photo of the week posts, which include this one of Lake Matheson just outside Franz Josef. And for more Australian fare, how about his 30 photos designed to inspire you to travel to the land down under?

Does it look good to you? Then enter the quiz. Week two is almost over, but with the Flaming Sambuca and African Breeze themed rounds coming up, if you’re quick you can still get your name in the hat three times for those two round the world tickets! Good Luck.

Travel Tuesday – The Road Forks

Yesterday we all got a bit carried away planning our South Africa meet-up, hence why this #TravelTuesday love comes a little on the late side – nevertheless this doesn’t in anyway diminish the travel-related affection we feel for The Road Forks.

The Road Forks was devised by Akila and Patrick and on their What We’re About summarise the concept most matter-of-factly,

“We are two travelers who are cooking and eating our way around the world.”

A dig into their itinerary reveals the extent of their travel plans. Since September 2009 they’ve been to Australia, New Zealand, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, China and are currently in South Africa. From there it is on to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and finally Europe…

You can find out more about destinations past by delving into the The Road Forks archive which is full of colourful entries on their global exploits, and for the here and now of South Africa you can check in by following their Twitter @theroadforks. Akila and Patrick also have a Facebook page which will keep you updated across all their online activity.

Akila and Patrick please accept STA travelbuzz’s virtual salute of approval for The Road Forks. We think it is great and highly recommend anyone out there with a love of travel and/or food spend some time meandering through the sites pages… you never know what you might find?

STA Travel Competition – Win Two Round the World Tickets!

STA Travel in conjunction with Qantas has launched a competition for you to win TWO round the world flights. Yes, you’re going to have the chance to snap up some #RTW goodness.

The Play and Win Round the World competition has already launched and you can put your name in the hat for those tickets by jumping headlong into week one with The Jagerbomb – an STA Travel RTW route that takes in the beautiful islands and sleepless cities of South East Asia. Don’t worry about keeping up-to-date with the rounds as we’ll be tweeting about the comp and using the hashatag #STAwin.

So how does it work? To be entered for the prize draw you’re going to have to get your travel quiz on! The competition requires you to make your way around the globe and back home by answering questions at each destination on the way – some are little trickier than others so be prepared… Don’t forget to tweet @STAtravelbuzz, including the tag #STAwin to let us know how you’re getting on!

Play and Win Around the World features four STA Travel RTW routes; each one live for a week, allowing you four chances to enter. The first route is The Jagerbomb… good luck!

Travel as an education…

Today’s post comes straight from Todd (@globetrooper) at Globetrooper and covers the act of travelling as being an invaluable education – a true University of Life.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this; there are already a couple of comments at Globetrooper, including one from Keith the Travelling Savage, so join in and let us know your thoughts…

Image: Costa Rica 2009Flickr Birgitta Seegers

We enter this world as newborns with an insatiable curiosity. Because suddenly, snatched from the comfort of the womb, we’re dropped into this foreign world where everything is new: the sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes, everything.

But as we grow, and as we ‘mature’, our environment becomes familiar. We can no longer just open our eyes to find a world of discovery; we must manufacture it. So we end up entertaining ourselves with university, careers, and heaven help us, reality TV.

Surely there’s more…

The Problem
The last straw is when you catch yourself saying, “Wow, you learn something new everyday”. Because people don’t say this as a statement of fact; they say it when they’re honestly surprised to learn something new. Personally, I think it’s a grave travesty when learning becomes so unexpected.

The Solution
So how do we re-visit that day when we left the womb; the day when life wasn’t such a grind and the world really was our freshly-shucked oyster? Simple… We travel.

When you open your eyes in another dimension (let’s imagine Calcutta, Cairo or Cartagena) you’re not clutching for the odd life lesson, you’re completely swamped by a world of contrasts. As you look in any direction, you see a world of humanity and life, rather than a world of financial derivatives, legal contracts and diet books.

The Case Study
When Lauren and I first arrived in Montreal, we found ourselves learning like children again. Everywhere we looked, we thought, “We should do it this way at home”, or, “Are these people nuts, why don’t they do it this way?” There were countless lessons, and this was only Canada (quite possibly the most similar country on the planet to our homeland, Australia).

When we visited the Middle East and Africa… well, let’s just say we’d been living with our eyes half-closed for 20+ years. And I don’t mean closed to struggle, I mean closed to fulfillment, community and adventure.

The Curriculum
But the real lessons of travel (which aren’t taught on campus) show that your values have less to do with Lamborghinis and more to do with making a difference, exploring the unknown, and of course, spending time with honest and thoughtful people.

It may sound defeatist to look the other way of modern consumerism, but then it sounds pretty insane to voluntarily live in a prison (be it a cubicle, suburbia, an actual prison, etc.).

The Pre-requisites
Thankfully, and somewhat ironically, there are no entrance exams for an Education on the Road. Because to subsist on the road is an education in itself. So the only pre-requisite is a thirst to know what’s really out there.

In all seriousness though, imagine yourself post-MBA. Then compare that to yourself post-long-term-round-the-world-discovery. Which version of you would better grasp global issues? Which version would know how to make a positive impact? And which version would know what it means to lead a fulfilling life?

Apply Now
Where do I start? Start with these: The Great Circular Indian Railway Challenge, A Trip to Timbuktu, Trips visiting North Africa and Trips through Indo China.

Thanks Todd! Remember we’d love to hear from you. Do you agree with Todd? Leave a comment below.

Travel Tuesday – GoBackpacking

It is that time of the week again – Travel Tuesday. Wrapped by our warm hug of travel based appreciation this week is GoBackpacking, the work of David Lee, who you can find on Twitter @rtwdave.

GoBackpacking encourages all those with even an inclining of wanderlust to embrace it and go. And that is a noble cause. The result of this is a website fit to burst with the sort of guides, stories and insights that veterans and novices alike can learn from. At it’s heart is the sharing of experiences, which in turn expands the pool of knowledge when it comes to seeing the world to vast proportions.

David’s credentials are born from the experience of leaving the USA in 2007 with a 20-pound pack, an ATM card and a desire to discover new things. He visited 22 countries in 20 months and from this decided to encourage others to do the same.

“This blog is dedicated to inspiring and motivating others to make their travel dreams come true, whether it be a one week vacation or a 5-year vagabonding odyssey.”

The site now has numerous contributors, all of who are listed on the GoBackpacking about page. To David and the whole team our Travel Tuesday three cheers should be resonating your way right about now!

GoBacking is on Facebook too so be sure to join in there, also David can be found managing Medellin Living, a blog about expat life in Colombia, and behind the scenes of Travel Blog Success.

Travelling experiences from our STA Explorers

It is time for an update on the activities of some of our STA Explorers and how their travelling experiences are currently panning out.

First a relative newbie to the clan – say hello to Nicole! She’s an Aussie who is heading to London after summer camp in the US. From our great capital she’ll set off again on adventures that will hopefully see her,

“… teach English, learn to snowboard in the Swiss Alps, master a foreign language and help save the giant pandas in China!”

All of this will be documented across Bitten by the Travel Bug, @NicoleTravelBlog and Facebook.

Alex of the South American loveliness that is afowen.com has added significant amounts to the sites What to do in Bogotá page. Basically it’s a must read if you’re visiting!

Michael has updated his Facebook photos with what he refers to as leftovers from Mongolia. Leftover doesn’t really do them justice as the images are great. I’ve included one below (statues/monuments are nothing without horses in my opinion), though I’d also like to recommend this super shot that has one commenter asking, ‘Did you accost a local?’

Travelling Editor Dylan has also updated, going into detail about the preparation and subsequent effects of kava. Something he experienced while in Fiji.

It was also experienced by our very own Cam and Siobhan at the Adventure Travel Show…

Finally if you’ve travelled and filled the less hectic days with music and film, the sharing of which with fellow backpackers is something Chris sees as a mainstay of travelling, you’ll enjoy his latest Top Ten Tuesday – Film’s and TV.

There is more from th STA travelbuzz tribe on our  travelling experiences page. If your interested in joining the STA Explorer fold, just leave us a comment below or get in touch via email or Twitter. We look forward to hearing from you.

Travel Tuesday – Globetrooper

Today’s hero of travel is the Globetrooper website, which promotes a truly shared experience when it comes to making your way around the world.

Essentially the site is a network where individuals just like you can build a journey of a lifetime and then ask like-minded folks to join you whether they’re friends, or those friends you haven’t met yet, strangers. In their own words,

“Globetrooper is a tool to find travel partners for group trips and world adventures.

More specifically, Globetrooper is a tool for adventurous travellers to create trips and invite people from all over the world to join them.”

Currently on the front page of their site are three featured trips, Sam’s Europe and anywhere else… no time limit, Mark’s Great Circular Indian Railway Challenge and Alice’s Backpacking/Working Europe in Spring ~ 2011 ~. Clicking through to these will give you a grand idea of what is possible at Globetrooper.

Obviously this is only scratching the surface of what is on offer, I looked though and found road trips from London to South Africa, plans to travel the world while playing poker and a Tour of Khovsgul Lake in Mongolia…

Of course there is also a page of travel guides to help with the planning, a forum for discussing said plans with the community and a blog covering plenty of useful and interesting travel related fare.

Globetrooper is lots of what we at STA travelbuzz love – community and travel. And this is why we’re giving them a Travel Tuesday virtual handshake of hearty approval! Good work!
